Thirty-four (34) attorneys reportedly appeared in court on Tuesday, May 16th, to defend the alleged killers of Deborah Samuel.
It is worth recalling that Deborah Samuel, a 200 level Christian female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, was beaten to death and burnt by her fellow students on the school premises on Thursday, May 12, over a ‘blasphemous’ voice message she sent to her department’s group chat.
Two prime suspects, identified as Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci, were arrested in connection with her murder, but over the weekend, some Sokoto residents staged a protest in the state to demand their release but their demand fell on deaf ears.
Well, the suspects were brought before a Sokoto State Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 16, and 34 lawyers came to defend them, PM News reports.
When asked to present their plea, they pleaded not guilty to the crime, and the defense team, led by Professor Mansur Ibrahim, requested for their release on bail on liberal terms, citing constitutional provisions and sections of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
However, the trial judge (name not given for security reasons) denied the request for bail and ordered the defendant’s placement in a correctional facility.
