We are saddened to report the death of the former Joburg Mayor Mpho Moerane. He sadly passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at 5:54 PM in a private hospital. Social media is flooded with tributes and condolence messages following the announcement of the tragic news. The unfortunate news was reportedly shared by his family. The family spokesperson, Mike Maile, stated that were disheartened by the death of Moerane. Apart from paying the personality heartfelt tributes, netizens also seem to search for his cause of death. According to reports, Mpho Moerane was involved in a tragic accident two weeks ago. Ever since the accident, several speculations were rife regarding his critical health. However, the family has denied the reports. Now, it is coming forward that Mpho has passed away and left all his well-wishers to mourn. After meeting with the deadly accident, the former Joburg Mayor was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Milpark Hospital.
Moerane was getting treatment for his injuries which eventually claim his life. Mpho remained unconscious in the hospital and despite all the best possible treatment, his life could not be saved. Since the local government elections in 2021, Moerane was the ANC caucus leader in Johannesburg. Reportedly, the mayor was due to contest the regional chair position at the ANC Johannesburg elective conference next weekend. In the past year, Mpho happens to be the third Johannesburg mayor to die.
Following Jolidee Matongo’s demise, he was elected mayor while he also served a brief stint as mayor of Joburg. In addition, Matongo was also a mayor for a month as he was elected after the death of Geoff Makhubo in July. It is no doubt to state the entire political world is grieving his sudden death. Lebogang Maile, Gauteng MEC for human settlements, urban planning and cooperative governance and traditional affairs, stated that he was deeply saddened by Mpho’s passing.
According to him, his death is a huge blow for local government not only in Johannesburg but provincially as a whole. Maile called Moerane a very disciplined and committed servant who was dedicated to the service of the people. The department said that Moerane had distinguished himself as one of the hardworking and consummate public representatives and added that Moerane was leading a highly-effective and servant-oriented opposition.
