Lauren Bernett JMU Death – James Madison University softball player Lauren Bernett has passed on, the school declared Tuesday.
She was 20.
No reason for death was given and calls by USA TODAY Sports to the Rockingham County, Virginia Sheriff’s Department were not promptly returned.
The school additionally said Wednesday’s doubleheader against Longwood has been dropped.
“School sports is incredible due to individuals with whom we get to cooperate consistently. We are a tight family. We are appreciative that Lauren has been essential for our JMU Athletics people group and will continuously believe her to be a Duke. We will miss her beyond a doubt,” the school said in an explanation.
Bernett, a sophomore catcher from McDonald, Pennsylvania, was a critical benefactor for James Madison’s keep-going season en route to the 2021 Women’s College World Series. The Dukes dominated matches against the highest level and possible hero Oklahoma and Oklahoma State before losing consecutive games to the Sooners in the elimination rounds.
This season, Bernett hit .336 with nine homers and 33 RBI, including setting the school’s single-game RBI record against the College of Charleston with seven on April 16.
On Monday, Bernett was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week as the Dukes cleared a three-game set from Drexel. She hit .778 with seven RBIs in the series.
