Reportedly, Gilley had recently returned home from the road after playing 10 shows in April. His death has affected many of his fans and well-wishers. After learning about Mickey’s death, singer Johnny Lee said that his heart will forever break over the loss of his dear friend Mickey Gilley. Lee added that Mickey believed in him when no one else did and said that losing Gilley feels like a bad dream and sadly it’s not.

Born on March 9, 1936, in Mississippi, United States, Mickey Gilley was a singer and songwriter. In the 1970s, Mickey started out singing straight-up country and western material in the 1970s. Later, in the 1980s, he moved towards a pop-friendly sound which eventually brought him further success on the country charts and pop charts too. Mickey had almost 17 number one country records starting with “Room Full of Roses” in 1974.

Mickey’s musical career got a new life with the film “Urban Cowboy”. The movie starred John Travolta and was set at Gilley’s own honky tonk club in Pasadena, Texas. For those unversed, the movie helped to popularize country-western culture in urban environments including mechanical bull riding.
