Deborah Samuel, a female student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, was beaten and burned to death by a mob on Thursday May 12 for alleged blasphemy.
Deborah reportedly sent a voice message to her class WhatsApp group chat to criticize those who continually sent religious material and videos to the group. The dead woman, who said the purpose of the group was for school material, assignments, and tests, was accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Some Muslim students at the school were reportedly angry and they stoned her, beat her to death and burned her body. A disturbing video that was shared on social media showed Deborah being stoned, attacked and burned to death by an angry mob on the school grounds.
Amid the outrage over Deborah’s gruesome murder, a man who has yet to be identified in the viral video can be seen bragging about his involvement in her murder.
“I killed her. I burnt her. You can see the matchbox I used in setting her ablaze here”, he said in Hausa.
