Malala Yousafzai Wiki/ Biography
Yousafzai, the daughter of an outspoken social activist and educator, excelled in school. Her father, who founded and ran the school she attended in Mingora, Khushal Girls High School and College, pushed her to continue in his footsteps. The TTP entered the Swat valley, which was formerly a popular tourist area, in 2007. The TTP, led by Maulana Fazlullah, began enforcing severe Islamic rule, destroying or closing girls’ schools, prohibiting women from participating in society in any way, and carrying out suicide attacks. For their protection, Yousafzai and her family fled the region, but they returned when tensions and violence subsided.
Yousafzai was shot in the head by a TTP gunman on her way home from school on October 9, 2012. The TTP and Fazlullah took responsibility for the assassination attempt on her life. She was transported from Peshawar to Birmingham, England, for treatment after surviving the attack. Yousafzai recovered and returned to her studies and activities in Birmingham, where she stayed with her family. On July 12, 2013, her 16th birthday, she made her first public appearance since being shot, speaking to a crowd of 500 at the United Nations in New York City.
